Let’s do some Machine Learning! Using TensorFlow, I decided to build the ultimate connoisseur by retraining the top layer of the Inception v3 model. I was able to accurately determine the painter of a painting with P < 0.001. The classifier was trained using only 50 paintings of each painter. The video below is a short demonstration.
Admittedly, this kind of ‘savant syndrome’ in AI only has one specific (and in this case rather useless) purpose. It could be interesting for museums or art collectors, however. Perhaps a Rembrandt that had not been recognised before can be found using this technique.
